Description

Abraham Lincoln: 1860 Lincoln & Hamlin Parade Torch. Tin cylindrical torch on metal bracket with single burner. The tin reservoir is 4" in diameter and 3 1/2" high, not counting the burner. The names "Lincoln" and "Hamlin" are painted on either side. There is some minor damage to the burner and the attached stem is somewhat loose (it was repaired with solder some time ago). It is attached to a 40" replacement pole. This was acquired by the consignor 22 years ago, having come out of an old-time collection. In the interim, another identical example surfaced, attached to a hand-carved rifle torch. That example came out of an estate sale in Michigan where it was stated the torch had been used in a Lincoln Wide Awake parade in Chicago. Outside of the replacement pole and a screw connecting it, this item is totally original and a wonderful display piece. We know of only one other Lincoln tin torch so-decorated; namely, the "Hurra for Lincoln" torch in the Smithsonian. Torchlight parade items (flags, torches, lanterns, marching uniforms) are among the most colorful and evocative of 19th century campaign paraphernalia. And, the Lincoln name does carry a special cachet value.
