Description
[Abraham Lincoln] White House Dessert Plate from the Lincoln Service. 8.5" in diameter, marked "Fabrique par Haviland & Co./ pour/ J. W. Boteler & Bro:/ Washington". This beautiful plate was one of the replacement plates ordered from J. W. Boteler & Brothers by the White House during the Grant and Arthur administrations. This plate, like the original pieces ordered by Mrs. Lincoln, was made by the French firm Haviland. Very light wear to the outer gold trim, else, excellent.Upon entering the White House in 1861, Mrs. Lincoln determined that there were not enough pieces remaining of the Franklin Pierce dinner service for a formal dinner. Armed with an appropriation from Congress for additional furnishings for the executive mansion, Mrs. Lincoln went to New York and Philadelphia on a shopping trip. In New York she ordered 666 pieces of Haviland china for the White House from the firm of E. V. Haughwout & Co. The pattern the first lady chose had the arms of the United States in the center with a border in a purplish red, called "Solferino", with a gold "Alhambra" painted trim. The design was popular and reordered on three occasions to replace broken, chipped, and missing pieces, in 1865 by President Andrew Johnson, in 1873 by President Grant, and in 1884 by President Arthur. This plate is from one of the two later reorders. A frequent guest at the White House, it is possible that Kittie Endsley Mathews obtained the plate as a memento from the President and First Lady. The plate was kept with all of the Endsley family McKinley relics offered in this auction.
