Description

William McKinley: The Best 3-D McKinley Item. One of the reasons that people enjoy collecting political items is discovering pieces that reflect the times, display the personality and character of the people and, on lucky occasions, add some whimsy to our lives. All three combine on this unique pro-McKinley display produced for the campaign of 1896. While Bryan was most popular with farmers and received the endorsement of the People's Party, Republicans did not write off this important segment of our population. This is a die-cut fiber or cardboard figure of a farmer and his dog. He holds a scroll that reflects his disappointment with the Nebraska populists he voted for in 1890 and 1892 and asserts that he now supports "McKinley and Hobart. Honest Money Protection Labor & Prosperity. Peace on Earth. Good Will to Man." The sign was meant to be attached to a telephone or telegraph pole. It measures 76" x 26". It consists of a chromolithograph print of a farmer and his dog. Several elements have been hand-painted, including the McKinley & Hobart campaign badge on the farmer's shirt and the message on the scroll itself which likely had some sort of advertisement in its previous incarnation. The pooch has a collar labeled "Protection". The imposing figure is hinged in the center and nailed to a wooden A-frame marked "O. C. McClentic. Chagrin Falls, O." The scroll is marked "Lincoln, Nebraska" on the bottom. There are wires and cords affixed to three locations on the back of the frame. The figure has scattered loss and chipping, but is fairly well-preserved, especially considering it was exposed to the elements for a brief time in 1896 and thereafter stored in a barn or attic. This is sure to be the centerpiece of any McKinley display or perhaps of an entire collection. This is the Hake book plate specimen.
