Description

Theodore Roosevelt: Impressive Safari Beer Stein. After leaving the Presidency, Teddy Roosevelt further burnished his reputation by going on safari to Africa in 1909 and 1910. He returned a true "American Idol". His homecoming prompted an outpouring of souvenirs, such as buttons, postcards, pitchers and bric-a-brac. The best homecoming piece, in our opinion, is this 13" polychrome ceramic 1 1/2 liter beer stein made in Germany. Of tapered form, it depicts TR riding atop an elephant and repelling a lion's attack. Lions appear throughout the landscape, including the handle and lid finial. Other beasts are perched in the trees. There are three inscriptions, all in German. The one encircling the bottom translates to: "By Day and By Night, the Hunter Watches." Small firing crack to back of lion head on handle. Excellent condition overall.
