Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt: Fala White House Gift. In 1940, FDR had his secretary Missy Le Hand order 212 sterling silver Scottie key chains or charms from Hammacher Schlemmer of New York for $1 each. Fifteen were returned, leaving 197 in circulation. They were given out as gifts to personal friends in honor of the White House pet, Scottish terrier Fala. The dog component measures 1 1/8" across and is attached by a chain to a horse shoe stamped "Sterling". FDR would famously take umbrage with Republican opponents who, not satisfied with attacking his family, went beyond the pale and attacked poor defenseless Fala. Everyone got a good laugh out of that!Condition: Excellent.
