An original and rare personal item belonging to Eleanor Roosevelt, an ornate Christmas gift given by FDR in 1934 to ER, an exquisite eighteen karat solid gold and diamond ladies compact. FDR's 1934 Christmas gift to his wife and First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, is elegantly crafted in woven gold, and the catch is set with four white diamonds. Within FDR's 1934 Christmas gift to ER is a gold inscription plaque upon which is inscribed in beautiful script: "To/ Eleanor/ Merry Christmas/ From Franklin/ 1934." The compact is in exquisite condition and measures 2" in diameter. The compact mirror within has slight age-related discoloration, but FDR's 1934 Christmas gift to his wife is completely functional, and in excellent condition. This magnificent and rare item was obtained from the estate of Grace Tully, FDR's long-serving personal secretary and friend to ER.
