Description
Alton B. Parker: Tabletop Cigar Cutter.Many political candidates were honored by having a cigar named after them. We suspect, though, that "The Chief Judge", named after 1904 Democratic nominee Alton Brooks Parker, did not have much of a shelf life. Parker was plucked out of relative obscurity to be the "sacrificial" candidate against the popular Theodore Roosevelt, a shoo-in for re-election. His 80 year old running mate, Henry Davis, was a wealthy West Virginia businessman who was selected for the ticket mainly in the hope of eliciting a large campaign contribution. Inasmuch as Parker enjoyed neither personal popularity nor likelihood of being elected, very few large display items were produced to honor him. This nickel or chrome-plated cigar cutter ranks as the premier 3-D or display piece for Parker. It is 7.5" x 8" wide and in choice condition. Parker appears in his judge's robes in the framed display panel. A red enamel inscription at top indicates they were "Havana Cigars". The item was made by Brunhoff Manufacturing Company of Cincinnati. For many years we have been aware of only a single example of this item, deeply ensconced in one of the hobby's top collections. This offering represents a highly important opportunity for collectors of political and tobacco-related items alike!
