Description

1825 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge, Number 1048. 2" square copper tag produced in Charleston, South Carolina between the years 1800 and 1860. These were issued annually and worn as identification tags by slaves who were hired out by their masters to do seasonal work. This one is stamped with the name of the silversmith (or coppersmith, as in this case) Lafar. It is inscribed "Charleston 1825 Servant No. 1048". It is slightly convex with two clipped corners and a dark patina.
