Description
William T. Sherman Carte de Visite Signed "W.T. Sherman General." 2.5" x 4", with a Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries, Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. A chest up portrait of the famed Union general, seen in his major general uniform. Shortly after the Civil War began, President Lincoln promoted William Sherman to brigadier general in command of the important Department of the Cumberland. However, the load became too heavy, and due to Sherman's bouts of paranoia, he was placed on leave at the beginning of December 1861. For the next few weeks, Sherman suffered some kind of breakdown, and fell into a depression. Thankfully, he made a recovery and returned to the army to serve under General Grant in Tennessee, aiding in the capture of Fort Donelson and the battle at Shiloh. Sherman later was given control of the Army of the Tennessee and led the successful Chattanooga Campaign. Despite his successes in the western theater, Sherman is most famous for his March to the Sea, ending in the capture of Savannah, Georgia. From the Bret J. There is minor soiling on verso, else very good.
