Description

William Rosecrans Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a bust portrait in uniform, with a Nichols & Howard, St. Louis, Missouri backstamp on verso. Signed below the image: "W.S. Rosecrans Brig. Genl. U.S.A."

William S. Rosecrans (1819-1898) was a respected and effective leader during the Civil War, with numerous victories in the Western Theater. However, his career took a disastrous turn after he was badly beaten at the Battle of Chickamauga. A poorly worded order caused a gap in the Union line, and his forces were overrun. He was soon after relieved by General Grant.

Condition: Light soiling and pencil marks at the edges. Light scuffing and pencil notations on verso. Wear to the corners.
