Description

George Armstrong Custer: Rare 1865 Mathew Brady Ninth-Plate Tintype Image. A cropped version of a pose designated in Katz's Custer in Photographs book as K-79. It is one of a series of images Brady took on May 23, 1865, in Washington, D.C. while Custer was in town to participate in the Grand Review of the Armies. Appearance is excellent, although for accuracy we note a bit of fine crazing and slight lifting of the emulsion in the field to the left of his figure. Corners clipped under the matte. This very desirable image is contained in an embossed leather case.
