Description

Union Colonel Robert Gould Shaw: Large Albumen Photograph of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, Commander of the African-American 54th Massachusetts Regiment and Killed in Action at the Battle of Fort Wagner. Approximately 9.25" x 11.5" overall. Colonel Robert Shaw (1837-1863) was born to prominent abolitionist parents, in a sense almost destined for his destiny in the war. He commanded the 54th Massachusetts, comprised of African-Americans, whose story was told in the film Glory. Shaw fought, died and was buried with his men - meant as an insult by the Confederates who defeated him, but held as a point of pride to his survivors. This remarkable image shows Shaw standing, in uniform. The image has only trivial aging, the top corner of the mat is lacking, otherwise it is a beautiful, clear image in excellent condition.
