Description

The Robert E. Lee Collection of Dr. Don Hopkins.

Robert E. Lee: Mammoth Mathew Brady Photograph.
16.5" x 20" [sight] mounted albumen photograph of Lee, double-matted and framed to an overall size of 31" x 34" Inscribed on lower border "Photographed by Brady & Co. Washington, D.C." This apparently unique photograph, a variation of the "clock on table" pose, shows a full view of the seated General including his fully-visible shoes, the entire clock and much more of the table than seen in other renditions. Close examination shows that this is not the same pose as the commonly seen "clock portrait" because of the position of Lee's left elbow in relation to the clock on the table and other small details. A CDV version, thought to be a separate pose, is simply a cut-down version of this one. A printed label below the albumen contains Brady's name and copyright date of 1866. The unframed photograph measures 20" x 24" in full, including the mount. Minor abrasions and nicks around the perimeter. This historic photograph is one of six exposures made by Brady in Washington, D.C. in 1866 and is one of the rarest Brady from-life photographs of Lee in existence. This exact photograph was illustrated in "Battlefield Photographer" (Center for Civil War Photography) in 2014.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
