James B. "Wild Bill" Hickok: A Stunning Virtually Mint Rockwood Cabinet Photo. In our May 2015 Americana auction, Heritage sold another superb Rockwood cabinet photo of Hickok for $16,250. It was hard to imagine an even finer copy might exist, as we had never held in our hands the photo sold by Cowan's in 2005 for $34,500. However, that very example has now been consigned to us for this current auction and, unbelievably, it is an even sharper image in equally choice, virtually mint condition. Vintage identification in pencil on verso.Hickok almost certainly posed for this iconic photo in 1873, when he appeared briefly on the New York stage with "Buffalo Bill" Cody in the legendary play "Scouts of the Plains." Only a handful of original Wild Bill photos dating from his lifetime have survived, and we are thrilled to be able to present yet another stunning example of this sought-after image. 4.125" x 6.375".
