Description

Abraham Lincoln: Rare Late Nineteenth-Century Albumen. This portrait was likely printed by George B. Ayres, although there is no blind stamp or back imprint. This pose was originally taken by Alexander Hesler on June 3, 1860 and is identified as O-26 in Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose by Charles Hamilton and Lloyd Ostendorf. Ayres purchased Alexander Hesler's original negatives from the Chicago photographer shortly after the Civil War. In 1881 he started printing images from the original negatives. In 1933 those negatives were broken when being shipped through the U. S. Mail to Washington, D. C. More often than not, the images made are in the 7" x 9" size range; this sample is an impressive 15.75" x 19.875". The photograph appears to be backed onto a larger board extending just over .25" beyond the right and left edges. There is moderate streaking, particularly on the left side, and minor scratching throughout. The bottom left corner, lower left edge, and center of the bottom edge show minimal loss. Toning and light staining are visible at the back. In overall good condition, this piece would bring some excellent drama to a display.
