Description

Abraham Lincoln: Oversized Hesler Photograph by George B. Ayres. Taken by Alexander Hesler on June 3, 1860 in his Chicago studio, the image is known as O-26 in Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose by Charles Hamilton and Lloyd Ostendorf. It is one of two images taken that day by Hesler. This albumen, circa 1880s, was printed by George Ayres of Philadelphia from the original negatives he acquired. Two identical blind stamps are present, with one whole stamp at the bottom right corner reading "G.B. Ayres/ Copyright 1897," while the second stamp at the bottom left corner is partially cut off at the date. On the verso handwritten in ink is the inscription "Phila. Dec. 13, 1906" at the bottom right corner. The piece measures 20.75" x 27.25". Some minor wear is present to the edges and corners, and a couple of white spots can be seen, one on his suit jacket and the other on his shirt. Somewhat brittle, with light toning throughout. When viewed at the back, there is minimal loss to the bottom right corner where it appears to be slightly dented. Overall, this piece is in great condition and would bring a stately quality to a display. No minimum bid. From the J.Doyle Dewitt Collection.
