Description

Sitka, Alaska: An Important Early View by Beverly Dobbs. Originally a major Tlingit Indian settlement on the Gulf of Alaska, it became one of the more prominent early Alaska towns, and was the site of the lowering of the Russian flag and the raising of the American one over Alaska upon its purchase by the U.S. in 1867. During the Klondike Gold Rush it became an important hub for miners and supplies. This beautifully composed 9" x 6.25" view of Sitka from the Bay was taken by Dobbs, one of the most significant early Alaska photographers.
