Description
P. E. Larson Gambling Hall Photograph with caption, "Such is life in the far west / Early morning call in a gambling hall / as the photographer saw it." 9.5" x 7.5". Below the caption is written, "Larson Pho 4485 Goldfield, Nev." This iconic image of early twentieth-century mining in the west was taken in a saloon equipped with a wall advertising the current market prices of the mines in Goldfield. Drunken men sprawled on the floor, not yet recovered to realize that their hard-earned pay has been lost on unwise bets and futile numbers. Larson was always fascinated by the paradox that men would work so hard to gather gold only to lose it so easily.P. E. Larson followed several gold rushes to capitalize on the frenzy they brought about in the lives of miners, their families, and local businesses. Larson wanted to memorialize the endeavors of these hardworking people, so he opened his first studio in Cripple Creek, Colorado, in 1896. Two years later he went to the Klondike and opened a studio in Dawson City. He then followed the new gold rush to Goldfield, Nevada, opening his Palm Studio in that desert town. In Goldfield, he changed his last name from Larss to Larson to give it a more western flavor and established himself as one of the greatest and most famous western artists in the history of the American West.
