A color photograph of Team USA members Tommie Smith and John Carlos' controversial black power salute on the Olympic medal stand. The print is signed at the lower right corner.
Smith and Carlos were the gold and bronze medalists in the 200-meter race. Their raised fists represented racial equality and solidarity with their fellow African-Americans who faced segregation and racism in America. Because of this act of defiance, both Smith and Carlos were banned from the Olympics for life. Leifer's photograph of the pair is one of the most iconic images in sports history. Neil Leifer grew up in New York and began taking sports images at a young age. He sold a number of photographs to Sports Illustrated, who hired him almost immediately. Leifer earned his first cover shot at the age of just 19, in 1962. In 1978, Leifer moved to Time Magazine, where he branched out from sports photography. Some of his famous subjects include George Bush, Burt Reynolds, Pope John Paul II, Jimmy Carter, and Carl Lewis.
Condition: Light toning at edges, else very good.
