James Van Der Zee was best known for his photography of black New Yorkers. The African-American photographer began his career as a darkroom assistant in 1915, but opened his own studio in Harlem the next year. Throughout World War I his business blossomed, and following the war, he produced hundreds of portraits of Harlem's expanding middle class population. Some of his more famous subjects were Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Joe Louis, Florence Mills, Countee Cullen, and Marcus Garvey.
Condition: Each print is dry mounted to 15 x 12-1/2 inches; there appear to be some scattered spots of retouching, and some minor indents and surface scuffs; overall, these prints appear to be in very good condition.
