Description

George Armstrong Custer: Signed Presentation Photo. This mounted albumen (6" x 8" on an 8" x 10" mount) shows George Armstrong Custer on the Yellowstone Expedition of 1873. Research indicates it was taken by William R. Pywell on September 6, 1873 as the official photographer for the expedition. There is an inked inscription on verso reading, "Elk killed on Mussel Shell river Montana in summer of 1873 by GAC. Weight dressed (illegible) lbs." (this entirely in the handwriting of Custer) and below, in another hand, "presented to Frank Mayo Esq. Gen. Geo. A. Custer. June 21, 1874." The photo is in exceptional condition with only two minor rice-paper repairs to tears in the mount. This is an exceptional photo, even without the inscription which, of course, takes it to a whole new level. Custer is shown in his buckskin jacket with fringe and his naval-style blouse with wide cravat.
