Albert Einstein Image Inscribed to a Jewish Emigre and Survivor of the German Concentration Camps

Photo measures 5 x 7 inches (125 x 187 mm), encapsulated by PSA/DNA, cert no. 85175200, (signature is graded an 8 on a Type I photograph) to an overall size of 6 5/8 x 10 inches (178 x 261 mm). Inscribed and signed in the lower margin: "To Mr & Mrs Eric Marmorek / Albert Einstein 48."

Like Einstein, Landshoff was a German-Jewish emigree who sought refuge in the United States in the 1930s. Erich Marmorek was a Vienna-born architect imprisoned in the Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps from June 3, 1938, to January 27, 1939, before his release to Vienna in 1939.

The present image was featured on a 1979 15-cent stamp, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Einstein's birth.

Condition: Slight toning and minor offsetting in lower margin, tape from hinge mount on verso.

Provenance: Erich Marmorek, and by inheritance to our consignor.
