Description
[John F. Kennedy]: Jacqueline Kennedy Signed Photo of JFK Lying in State Inscribed to to Brig. Gen. Godfrey T. McHugh. 8" x 10" photo on 12" x 13" mount. Poignant image of John F. Kennedy lying in State with Brig. Gen. McHugh kneeling at the casket. Inscribed and signed, "For Godfrey McHugh - who served the President and was with him till the very end. With my appreciation Jacqueline Kennedy."It is important to note that this photograph shows a significant departure from standard protocols of military procedure. Until JFK's death, military honor guards at funerals would stand facing outward, away from the casket, as a symbolic gesture of protecting the deceased commander-in-chief. McHugh asked for a reversal of this protocol, which Mrs. Kennedy granted, allowing uniformed military guard to face the casket of her husband in respectful reverence. The shift from facing outward to inward has been maintained in military funerals since. A historically important photograph!
As a military aide to the President, McHugh's duties included supervising Air Force One. He often rode in the middle of the front seat of the Presidential State Car. During the fateful trip to Dallas on November 22, 1963, McHugh was moved further back in the motorcade and was not in his usual place in the President's car. He remained in attendance during the autopsy, and guarded Kennedy's body on Air Force One until they returned to Washington, D.C.
This is one of four lots in this auction from McHugh's estate.
Condition: The photo has minor edge irregularity at the extreme top/bottom edges, however, the inscription and signature of Mrs. Kennedy are excellent, overall the photo displays in Fine condition. Not examined out of frame.
