Photographer William H. Tipton: Original Gettysburg Monument Photographs Sample Book. Possibly unique sample book containing albumen photographs of the Gettysburg battle field monuments. Leather bound book contains 50 mounts with 100 mounted photographs, recto and verso of each board. Circa 1880's, varying in size from 8" x 10" to 8 1/4" x 13 1/4". The rebound leather book measures 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 3 1/4". Spine and front cover labeled. Each photograph has a hand written inventory number in pencil.

William H Tipton (1850-1929) was a noted American photographer during the second half of the 19th century, most noted for his extensive early photography of the Gettysburg Battlefield. Born in Gettysburg, and studied photography as an apprentice of Charles and Isaac Tyson, who were among the earliest Gettysburg photographs. In 1868 Tipton acquired most of the assets of Tyson studio and went into business himself. By 1888, he had produced some 5,000 views of the battlefield, and eventually became one of America's best known photographers.

Condition: Very light wear to leather binding. Some loss and chipping to bottom of mounts, not affecting images. A great opportunity to acquire a seminal piece of history.
