Description
Clarence Darrow: Leopold-Loeb Murder Case Trial Photos. Group of nine 10" x 8" glossy photographs of Clarence Darrow taken during the famous Leopold-Loeb Trial of September 1924. The two University of Chicago students kidnapped and murdered 14-year old Robert Franks. Their parents hired Darrow at a cost of $70,000. Darrow entered a guilty plea, delivered a 12-hour impassioned plea against capital punishment and managed to convince the judge to order life imprisonment for both offenders. The case inspired plays and movies, including Hitchcock's "Rope" and Roman Polanski's "Compulsion" where Orson Welles played the part of Darrow. Eight of the nine photos have embossed credits for the "Herald & Examiner" of Chicago. Sold together with a photographic mailer which contained the photos, addressed to Ruby H. Darrow, the consignor's great aunt and wife of Darrow.Auction Info
