Description
Annie Oakley: An Extraordinary Arena Photograph. This unique picture was taken during a Wild West performance in Philadelphia, probably in the mid-1890s, by photographer J. W. Allison. Allison later became noted for his World War I-era naval photographs. Here he captures Annie's act in unusual detail and from a vantage that puts him just out of the line of fire. The grandstands, under canvas, are full. Spectators taking "free seats" line the roof of an adjacent building. Two boys are loading the traps with clay pigeons. Behind them, next to the chair, is a basket of the black composition target balls manufactured by the Wild West show's own armorers. Two long lanyards snake back to Frank Butler who kneels, ready to launch the targets at the command of his famous wife. Best of all, Annie's stance, and her eyes, are captured here better than in any unstaged picture we have seen. The print is 8" x 6" on a 14" x 12" board. The card is soiled with a surface divot lower left. The image itself is excellent and unblemished. This lot is from the collection of Bess Edwards, grand-niece of Annie Oakley, and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her authenticating this item as described.
