George Meade Carte de Visite Signed "Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl. U.S.A." 2.5" x 4", with a Brady's, New York imprint on verso. A vignette bust portrait of Meade, seen dressed in military uniform. Signed at the lower margin of the albumen. On verso has been written in pencil, "George G. Meade Comdg Army of Potomac / March 18, 1864 / 1/25/1989 Taken from the personal album of Maj. AP Martin artillery brigade commander U-Corp art, - Gettysburg Ex CMDR 3RD MASS BATTY."

George Meade (1815-1872) was an 1835 graduate of West Point and served with distinction in the Second Seminole War, Mexican-American War and most notably in the Civil War. He served in many of the major battles of the war and was promoted to command the entire Army of the Potomac just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg. He later went on to command the army during the Overland Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg, and Appomattox, which saw the final surrender of Lee. From the Bret J. Condition: Light toning throughout, with soiling and wear at the edges and corners. Minor chipping at the bottom edge. A few spots of soiling on verso, else very good.
