Description
Winfield S. Hancock Carte de Visite Signed "Winfd S. Hancock Major Genl U.S. Vols." 2.5" x 4.25", with no photo studio imprint. A vignette bust portrait, seen in uniform. Signed on the lower part of the albumen. His colleagues knew the Union general, celebrated for his successes in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, as "Hancock the Superb". At the Battle of Gettysburg, Hancock led his men while sitting astride his horse at the front of his lines during Pickett's Charge. It was not until the final stages of the battle that Hancock was hit with what he thought was a nail. In fact, a mini ball had passed through the pommel of his saddle and carried the bullet, and bits of foreign matter, into his right thigh. He was transported by ambulance to Westminster, then Baltimore, then Philadelphia. By October, although the wound was still open, he was able to walk with a cane and resume command of the Second Corps. It was this fortitude and loyalty that led President Grant to say: "Hancock stands the most conspicuous figure of all the general officers who did not exercise a separate command. He commanded a corps longer than any other one, and his name was never mentioned as having committed in battle a blunder for which he was responsible." After his recovery, Hancock was nominated as the Democratic candidate in the election of 1880, and was only narrowly defeated by James Garfield. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.
Condition: Light toning throughout, with a spot of foxing at the right of Hancock's head. Minor wear to the edges and corners. Two imperfection spots, one to the left of Hancock's head and the other at the right center edge. Overall good.
