Description
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson Carte de Visite.2.5" x 4", with an Anderson & Co.'s, Richmond imprint on verso. A rare oval bust portrait, one of two known "from life" photographs of Jackson taken at Nathaniel Routzhan's studio in Winchester, Virginia in November 1862. On verso there is an inscription in ink that reads, "The only genuine direct photograph of Genl. Stonewall Jackson/given me by Capt. Clarke."
There are only a handful of photographs of Jackson that exist because the general had a strong aversion to having his picture taken. This image, though, was a favorite of his wife, Mary Anna Jackson.
Thomas J. Jackson (1824-1863) is probably the best-known Confederate general after Robert E. Lee. He earned his nickname "Stonewall" after his bravery at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 when he rushed his troops forward in order to close a gap in the line against a determined Union counter-attack. Upon observing Jackson, one of his fellow generals reportedly said, "Look men, there is Jackson standing like a stone wall!" His storied military career was cut-short when he was accidentally shot by his own men after the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863 and died of complications from his wounds. His name would be forever more associated with Southern mythology and "The Lost Cause". From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.
Condition: Minor wear and toning to the edges, with a few spots of soiling at the left side. Overall very good.
