Description
Robert Schenck Carte de Visite Signed"Robt. C. Schenck." 2.5" x 4", with a Brady's, Washington, D.C. and New York imprint on verso. A seated portrait of Schenck dressed in his military uniform, signed below the albumen on the mount. Before the war, Schenck was appointed as Minister to Brazil, but returned to the U.S. in 1854. When Fort Sumter was attacked, Lincoln commissioned Schenck brigadier general of volunteers. Although he was not a military man, he studied military science. He fought at the First Battle of Bull Run and participated in the counteractions against Jackson's Valley Campaign. On August 29, 1862, he was severely wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run, and his right arm was permanently damaged. Unable to participate in active field duty, he was sent to Maryland to repress the threat of an uprising by its citizens. He officially resigned from the army in December 1863, and regained his seat in Congress. After the war, President Grant appointed him Minister to the United Kingdom. From the Bret J. Condition: Toned throughout, with darker toning at the upper right corner. Spotting throughout. Soiling at the right edge and lower right edge.
