Description
Robert E. Lee: Six Cartes-de-Visite [CDV] Including Two Inscribed by Mary Custis Lee. 1) "Buttoned coat in-the-field" portrait with very rare Minnis & Cowell embossed credit. Circa 1863. Typically seen with oval portrait, this is a "full size" rectangular format showing seven of the eight buttons going down Lee's jacket. Diagonal clip at top with ink stain, not affecting the portrait. Some retouching. 2) Sarony carte done circa 1866-1871, copied from the "Blockade portrait" showing a much larger head of the subject than was previously customary. It was apparently cropped from a full plate image, pasted on a card then re-photographed as a CDV. 3) Portrait taken by Brady in 1866, one of four variants taken with a single exposure of a four-lens camera. Originally not-mounted, but subsequently affixed to an album page. Excellent clarity. Faint pencil inscription on bottom. 4) Circa 1870s altered portrait after the Brady original of 1866. The photographer (possibly David Ryan of Savannah) removed the civilian clothing and replaced it with the prohibited Confederate uniform. Some retouching. No credit or back mark. Extremely rare. 5) Photograph of Martha Washington painting with Boude & Miley of Lexington, Virginia back mark. Trimmed at bottom. Inscribed on verso by Mary Custis Lee: "From an original painting at Arlington Va Woollaston. M. C. Lee". 6) The matching CDV with George Washington, inscribed on verso "Taken from an original painting at Arlington Va in the Provincial uniform. M. C. Lee".From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
