    Description

Robert E. Lee: Miley Carte-de-Visite [CDV]. Vignetted portrait in profile taken in June 1870 by Michael Miley of Lexington, Virginia. One of several poses taken on this day for use by artist Edward V. Valentine as models for his sculpture. It also served as the basis for the painting of Lee by John Dabour, commissioned by Lee's wartime aide-de-camp Walter H. Herron. The General wore two different coats for this session, one a frock coat and the other a sack coat. He seems to be wearing the very stylish "club collar" with rounded collar tabs in each photograph. This portrait was taken with Lee in the frock coat with stepped lapels. Photographer's credit and back mark on coated stock.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
