Description

Richard Brooke Garnett or Muscoe Russell Hunter Garnett Carte de Visite. Measuring 2.5" x 4", the unidentified man is seen chest up, staring straight at the camera. The man in the photograph is thought to be either Richard B. Garnett, a Confederate general killed during Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg, or, more likely, Muscoe R. H. Garnett, a member of the Confederate Congress who died of typhoid fever in 1864 while attending a session of Congress, The CDV is identified on the verso as "Gen Garnett" in an unknown hand. As if to further confuse the situation, a faded inscription on the verso reads, in part: "Possibly Alexander Peyton Garnett . . . officer and personal physician to Jefferson Davis." Backstamp of Silsbee, Case & Co. on the verso. Fine.

Controversy surrounds this photograph. There exist only two "identified" photographs of Confederate General Richard Brooke Garnett, though they may actually be of his cousin, fellow Confederate General Robert Selden Garnett, the first southern general to be killed during the war.
