Description
Original Civil War Art on Carte de Visite, inscribed "Off Charleston S.C. / Dec 17 1862 / F. C. Russell". A splendid watercolor depicts the American flag flying over a coastal fort mounted with two cannon. Light browning, very good condition. In 1862 the Confederate flag was flying over Fort Sumter, so this is either a wishful composition or the depiction of another location. Regardless, the artist was likely Frederick C. Russell of Massachusetts, an engineer with the U. S. Navy.Auction Info
