Description

Native American CDV: Indian Chief Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick Whitney's Gallery, Saint Paul front imprint. Author Bruce White, in his book "We Are At Home Pictures of the Ojibwe People," wrote this about Chief Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick: "The image Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick projected in his photographs was in keeping with his reputation and entrepreneurial behavior. His frock coat and blanket, combined with a magnificent feathered turban style headdress, represented his roles of both Warrior and Diplomat. Yet this combination also symbolized that he was neither a 'blanket' Indian, nor one who had completely assumed the new characteristics that whites sought to impose on native people."

Condition: Light soiling, else fine.
