Description

Major General George Armstrong Custer, His Wife Libby, and Brother Tom: Excellent 1865 Brady Carte de Visite. A Brady image taken January 3, 1865, in Washington, D.C. featuring Custer, his wife and brother Lieutenant Thomas Ward Custer, an image listed as K-49 in Katz's book Custer in Photographs. Custer appears seated in his best uniform with Libby in her finery seated at his side and brother Tom standing between them. Though Thomas was six years junior to his famous brother, he held his own on the battlefield winning two Medals of Honor in three days in April of 1865. The brothers were to share a common destiny however, as both were killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. A beautiful example of this CDV with gilt rules surrounding the image, "Brady/ Washington" printed at bottom, along with Brady backmark. A previous owner has written ID on the verso in pencil and there is also an ink signature "C G Davis". Only a minor stain at upper left corner keeps this from perfection.
