Description
George A. Custer Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with a John Goldin & Co., Washington, D.C. imprint on verso. Custer is seen in a nearly full-length portrait, sitting in full uniform, his right arm casually hanging over the back of a fringed chair. His hat, held in his left hand, rests on his left knee. His uniform and general's rank insignia are shown to good effect. This is a variation of several poses of Custer taken in May 1865 by the John Goldin studio, while Custer was in Washington for the Grand Review celebration. Although he served with distinction in the Civil War, Custer is most remembered for his "Last Stand" against the Lakota and Cheyenne alliance of Native Americans at the Battle of Little Big Horn, where superior numbers overwhelmed him and his cavalrymen and all were killed. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.Condition: All of the corners are clipped. Edges are lightly toned, else very good.
