Description
Drummer Boy Julius Langbien Carte de Visite. 2.75" x 4.25", with a Charles D. Fredrick & Co., New York imprint on verso. Langbien is seen posed in a 9th New York Zouave uniform with tasseled fez, holding a drum at his side and sticks in his hand. He was just thirteen when he enlisted in the regiment on May 4, 1861, and became affectionately known to his fellow soldiers in the 9th NY as "Jennie", due to his youthful appearance. Despite his youth, Langbien was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on January 7, 1895 for his actions at Camden, North Carolina, April 19, 1862, when he saved the life of Second Lt. Thomas L. Bartholomew. The citation reads, "A drummer boy, 15 years of age, he voluntarily, under heavy fire, went to the aid of a wounded officer, provided medical assistance for him, and aided in carrying him to safety." Despite being told by two doctors that Bartholomew would not survive, Langbien defied orders and procured a spot on a wagon transport that took the second lieutenant to a hospital. Bartholomew recovered from his near-fatal wounds and many in the unit recognized the small boy for his incredible heroism. Langbien mustered out of service in 1863. After the war, he studied law and became a New York state judge. He was one of only two members of Hawkins' Zouaves to win a CMOH during the Civil War. From the Bret J. Further soiling on verso, else very good.
