Description

Don Carlos Buell Carte de Visite Signed Twice. 2.5" x 4", with a Wenderoth & Taylor, Philadelphia imprint on verso, No. 37695. A head and shoulders vignette portrait of Buell, seen wearing his military uniform. He has signed the bottom margin, "D.C. Buell, Maj. Genl." On verso, Buell has also inscribed "For Miss Tillstren, with Genl. Buell's compliments." Don Carlos Buell (1818-1898) commanded the Department of the Ohio and performed admirably at Shiloh and, to a certain extent, at Perryville, but his overly cautious approach resulted in his dismissal on October 1862. In March 1864, Grant offered him a position, but Buell refused to serve under Sherman or George Thomas. He officially resigned from the army on June 1, 1864. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Uneven toning throughout, with minor bumping to the photo's bottom edge. Minor corner wear, else good.
