Description

Confederate Signal Corps Blockade Runner Album: James B. MacLellan. Incredible image signed on the verso "Yours Very Truly / Jas. B. MacLellan / Signal Corps / C.S.A.". MacLellan appears in records as "McLellan" and is listed as being in the regular Confederate States Service. Wears double breasted shell jacket with dark standup collar and no visible rank insignia. Belt with two piece interlocking buckle, stag handled knife in sheath on one side of his belt and larger wooden handled knife in sheath on the other side. Holds binoculars in one hand, the other hand on the sling of the binoculars case which is visible suspended at his side. Also wears knee high boots. Backmark of "J. M. Margeson / 90 / Granville Street / Halifax, N. S." The photographers who took the pictures in the Lindsay album were located in Richmond, New Orleans, Houston, Halifax and Havana. The latter two locations were ports from which the blockade runners could operate safely. Lindsay was head of the Signal Corps commanded by General John B. Magruder. MacLellan served aboard the Confederate blockade runner C.S.S. Wren. One small spot of discoloration on one boot, else excellent. One of the greatest Confederate cartes-de-visites we've ever seen.
