Confederate Colonel Ambrosio José Gonzales Carte de Visite, blank back with penciled identification, Confederate manufacture. A magnificently tinted image showing an artillery colonel in regulation uniform. Fine condition. Ambrosio Gonzales (1818 - 1893) was a Spanish-born Cuban heavily involved in the island's independence movement. In fact, he authored a manifesto advocating American annexation of Cuba. Gonzales married into South Carolina society before the Civil War and was active in Confederate coastal defenses after the fall of Fort Sumter.Auction Info
