Description
Confederate Captain with a Uniformed Slave Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with a Riddle's Photographic Temple, Macon imprint on verso. An unidentified Confederate captain seated with his slave, also dressed in a Confederate shell jacket and matching pants, standing behind him. Wartime photographs of slaves dressed in Confederate uniforms are exceedingly rare, and this is one of only a handful known to exist. The photographer, Andrew J. Riddle, is well known for his photographs of Andersonville prison. He took up photography in 1846 and studied under famed lithographer Napoleon Sarony. Riddle went on to open his own studio in 1851 in Baltimore, and his successes allowed him to open further branch studios in Macon and Rome, Georgia. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.
Condition: The corners are clipped, and there is light toning and soiling throughout. Else very good.
