Description
Boston Corbett Carte de Visite. A handsome Mathew Brady image of Boston Corbett. This true to life "mad hatter" shot and killed John Wilkes Booth. On April 26, 1865, Sergeant Boston Corbett of the 16th New York Cavalry raised his Colt revolver to shoot John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln's infamous assassin was cornered in a burning tobacco barn on the Virginia farm of Richard Garrett. Ignoring orders to take Booth alive, the over-zealous Corbett fatally wounded the fugitive with the justification that "God Almighty directed me." This photo shows Corbett standing near a chair, wearing his Union blues. The insignia and adornments are still visible on his hat. The crossed swords of the cavalry are in the center and the letter L surmounts them. Bears the Brady imprint on the recto and verso. Below the photograph it reads: "Sergt. Boston Corbett, 16th N.Y. Cavalry, Who Shot J.W. Booth." In fine condition; moderate soiling on the emulsion (appears that it could be cleaned); light overall toning on both sides; small stain near Corbett's feet; slightly bent corners; double lined gilt border; square corners.Auction Info
