Description

Abraham Lincoln: "Solitary Pine" Carte de Visite [CDV]. 2 3/8" x 4". From-life portrait O-86 by Mathew Brady, one of the most popular CDV images of Lincoln. Gold-ruled borders and sharp corners, with Brady's backstamp on the verso. A faint period annotation in the bottom margin of the card mount reads "A. Lincoln."

The image was taken by Brady in Washington, D.C., on January 8, 1864. Lincoln's stance in this portrait is commonly referred to as the "solitary pine pose," a phrase derived from writer Francis Grierson's recollection of watching Lincoln debate Stephen Douglas in 1858. Grierson famously observed that "[Lincoln] rose from his seat, stretched his long, bony limbs upwards as if to get them in working order and stood like some solitary pine on a lonely summit."

Condition: Faint foxing to the card mount; otherwise an excellent example.
