Description

Abraham Lincoln Carte de Visite from a Mathew Brady Photograph. 2.5" x 4". The President is seen sitting in profile from the waist up. Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries imprint on verso. This image was used to recreate Lincoln's visage on the penny.

On Tuesday, February 9, 1864, three days before his 55th birthday, President Lincoln posed for this photograph and six others at Mathew Brady's Washington Studio for perhaps the most elaborate sitting Lincoln had ever granted to Brady. Other images taken that day were used for the $5 bill and numerous postage stamps.
