Description

[Texas Rangers]. Frank L. Schmid Cabinet Card, 1888. 6.5" x 4.25". A portrait of the well-armed Texas Ranger holding a riding crop while standing beside his horse. Fellow Texas Ranger Walter Durbin's inscription on the verso identifies the subject as "Ranger Frank Smith and Horse Rio Grande City 1888." A later inscription below clarifies "Frank L. Schmid (correct spelling)." Ownership stamp "J. W. Durbin", Joseph Walter Durbin, on verso. A later collector has written his name on the verso in modern ink. Minor tape damage to verso.

Schmid (1866-1893) served with Company "D," Frontier Battalion, for seven years before his death from a gunshot wound in 1893. The fatal wound was sustained in 1889, a year after this photograph was taken, when his company attempted to intervene in political unrest in Fort Bend County. Schmid suffered with the wound for many years, briefly recovering enough to return to a clerical position with the Rangers in 1892. Provenance: Durbin Family, Robert W. Stephens, George Jackson Collection.
