Description

Company "D"

[Texas Rangers]. Company "D," Frontier Battalion, Cabinet Card, circa 1888. 6.5" x 4.25". An iconic group portrait of Company "D" Rangers at the height of their notoriety. Among the Rangers pictured are Captain Frank Jones, Bass Outlaw (who often lived up to his name), J. Walter Durbin (who would later be elected Frio County Sheriff), William "Tink" Durbin (who later served as Denton County Sheriff's Deputy), Cal Aten (the younger brother of Ranger Ira Aten), and Frank Schmid (who sustained a fatal gunshot wound the year after posing for this photograph). This photograph was taken in Rio Grande City, Texas, on the same day that individual portraits of Walter Durbin and Frank Schmid were taken. (Both appear in this sale as lots 44199 and 44198). At the time of this portrait, the Frontier Battalion had recently been reduced to only three companies-"B," "D," and "F"-to police the entire state with only approximately fifty Rangers. These men of Company "D" were responsible for central and western Texas. Backstamped "L.P. Beckham Photographer." Moderate wear to the edges of card and photograph. Some red discoloration exists near in the right margin and near the left margin. This is a widely recognized Ranger photograph and has been reproduced in many books; this is the only known original print of this photograph. Provenance: Robert W. Stephens, George Jackson Collection.
