Description
[Gettysburg Casualty]. Union Colonel Edward E. Cross Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 3.75". Col. Cross is featured in a full length studio portrait, in full uniform, sporting a long beard and holding his hat in his right hand. An inscription appears on the verso, in an unknown hand, reading: "Likeness of Col / E.E. Cross Col of / 5th Regt N.H. Vol. / Presented to Capt / Pierce by Col. Cross / Dec 21st 1861 / Camp Californ[i]a / Virginia." Fine.Edward E. Cross (1832-1963) worked as a journalist before enlisting in the Union Army as colonel of the 5th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the Battles of Seven Pines and Antietam and participated in the Seven Days Battles and the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Placed in command of a brigade during the Battle of Gettysburg, he was wounded again, this time mortally, as his men entered the Wheatfield. He was removed from the field and died the following day.
