Description

[Abraham Lincoln Assassination] A Selection of Cartes de Visite and a Cabinet Card Associated with the Death of Lincoln [CDVs]. The night that Lincoln died was filled with intense emotion, great confusion, and inconsolable grief for all who closely witnessed the last hours of the President's life firsthand. Among those who were the central eyewitnesses to that tragic chain of events was Colonel George C. Rutherford, who spent the night of April 14, 1865, in constant vigil at the Peterson House in Washington where Lincoln perished. Much of what we know about that night is taken from the written firsthand account of Rutherford, who was stationed on guard at the Peterson House. It was Rutherford who sent a telegram to the newspapers in the early morning hours of April 15th, notifying them that the President "is just expiring." It was Rutherford who worked to ensure that key officials were notified, Rutherford who described the gruesome injuries in his detailed report, Rutherford who placed two silver coins upon Lincoln's eyes upon his demise, and Rutherford who watched as Lincoln's body was placed into a casket while Mary Todd and Stanton wept. This important group of four images captures some of the history of that terrible night. (1) A CDV of George C. Rutherford with gold-ruled border and no back mark, Rutherford appears somber and solemn with arms folded and fixed gaze. Slight evidence of staining in upper right corner but a clear and generally clean image in fine condition. (2) A very rare CDV of the bed where Lincoln died. Clearly showing the blood-soaked pillow where his head lay, next to a white, unblemished pillow. A most provocative image with Henry Ulke, back mark dated 1865. The bottom corners are slightly worn but overall a clear image in fine condition. (3) A CDV image of General Joseph K. Barnes who was the attending surgeon the night Lincoln was mortally wounded. With Brady back mark, the CDV is in excellent condition. (4) Large cabinet card showing the Peterson House where Lincoln died. A sign above the door reads "House Where Abraham Lincoln Died Open All Tours Day and Evening 25c." No back mark but a handwritten inscription in ink denotes that this is the house where Abraham Lincoln died at "twenty-two minutes past 7 am April 15-1865." The Cabinet Card is in excellent condition. A remarkable collection of important photographs from a seminal moment in American history! From The Collection of Dr. Blaine Houmes
