Description
Union Major General Daniel Edgar Sickles: Inscribed Albumen Cabinet Card. Approximately 4.25" x 6.5", with a Sarony, New York studio mark on the lower recto. Sickles is posed seated in full military regalia, his arm through his crutches. Inscribed on the verso: "To Comrade Charles Sonnenberg / of 70th N. Y. Infantry / Sickles' Brigade, / 3rd Army Corps / Army of the Potomac / from / Major General D. Sickles U.S. Army. / Commander of the 3rd Army Corps / New York Dec. 1 1892". Charles Sonnberg (proper spelling) enlisted on April 24, 1861 in New York City. He was discharged for disability on November 26, 1862. Dan Sickles (1819-1914) was a colorful and controversial military officer who lost his leg to a cannon ball at Gettysburg. This is a superb post-war image with modest age toning to the verso and a trivial blemish at the upper edge of the recto side, which we mention for the sake of accuracy.Auction Info
